Tim Chastain of Altamonte Springs, Florida is a speaker and trainer with a background in both corporate and non-corporate environments. After leaving the corporate world, he devoted himself to helping professionals in job transition. He coaches those in job search and writes a lot of résumés.
Though Tim was born in Alabama, he moved to Florida with his parents in 1955. He is not a native, but has lived in Florida longer than most natives! His wife of 30 years is Marilyn, and they have one son, Drew, of whom they are very proud.
Marilyn works in a law office and spends much of her free time gardening and landscaping.
Drew earned his doctorate in philosophy from Tulane University in New Orleans and continues to live in New Orleans, teaching philosophy and participating in many community activities.
One thing that characterizes the Altamonte Chastains is reading. Tim, Marilyn, and Drew are all avid readers. Tim and Marilyn's library exceeds 4000 volumes and graces most rooms of their home.
Tim is a ninth generation descendent of immigrant Pierre Chastain.
Tim worked for 20 years in the Christian bookstore industry, first for a small bookstore chain, and then for 14 years at Family Christian Stores, the nation's preeminent Christian bookstore chain. As District Manager for his last seven years at Family, Tim was deeply involved both in management and in training for the company, and he was certified as a trainer by Mandev.
After leaving Family, Tim developed his own training business, and was certified by AchieveGlobal (Zenger Miller). Most of the training he delivers consists of workshops, speaking engagements, and coaching in the area of career transitions - specifically résumé writing, interviewing skills, job search strategies, and networking. He has written dozens of professional résumés and is a member of the National Résumé Writers Association.
As a trainer, Tim is very active in the Central Florida Chapter of ASTD (American Society for Training and Development), the international association for trainers and related professionals. He recently completed a term as VP of Professional Development.
Tim is increasingly called upon as a speaker. He is an Advanced Toastmaster and is currently an Area Governor, responsible for several Toastmasters clubs in Central Florida. He is co-founder and an officer of the Central Florida Facilitators Toastmasters Club #9958 in Altamonte Springs.
As a child, Tim was influenced by the Free Will Baptist Church in which he was raised. However, after high school, he associated with the Church of God and received a BA in Religion and Church History from Lee University, a Church of God institution in Cleveland, Tennessee, and did course work at the seminary. After college, Tim served for seven years in the Church of God bookstore chain.
When Tim joined the staff of Family Christian Stores and moved to Memphis, he affiliated with the Assemblies of God, a denomination similar to the Church of God. He was active with the Assemblies until he chose to become a member of a congregation of the Presbyterian Church, USA.
The variety of church associations does not mean Tim is fickle. Each affiliation was very meaningful and represents a stage in his spiritual journey.
The Free Will Baptist Church stands in the fundamentalist tradition, the Church of God and Assemblies of God are Pentecostal bodies in the evangelical tradition - conservative, but not so much as fundamentalists. The Presbyterian Church is a mainline denomination that embraces both conservatives and what some term theological liberals.
Tim has urged his son, Drew, to stay in the family church, and to call from time to time to find out which one it is.
