His father was Joesph Chastain. I'm not certain on the rest. We have family reunions on Labor Day weekend, on Sunday. Our reunions are held in Hiawasee, Ga.

My great-great-great grandmother was Sarah Jane Chastain (1/7/1833-3/31/1912). She was married to Elias Duncan (8/31/1831-2/4/1883). They lived in Washington County Indianna & Afton, OK areas. Sarah's father was Peter G Chastain (3/14/1808-7/18/1879). I traced the Chastain line back to Jean Chastain (1544-1/6/1581) in Paris, France on Ancestry.com. I had no idea that I had relatives in America predating the Revolutionary War. This is very exciting to me.

My son Edward Chandler ("Teddy") Tedholm is a 19-year-old dance major at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and has been featured several times on the hit TV show, "So You Think You Can Dance." My 27-year-old daughter, Miranda Joy Tedholm, is a PhD candidate at Indiana University in Bloomington, attending on a full fellowship. Both of my children are 10th-generation descendants of Pierre Chastain. Hope to see you soon online! |

I would love to know which of the sons my family comes from. My Father, Leaford Marion Chastain, and his family lived first in Georgia, then moved to Oklahoma, then to Missouri, and finally my Father moved to Virginia in the mid 1930's. He lived from 1911 until 1985 and he never knew how close he was to finding his Pierre! As is so happens Louisa the place where he died was not that far from Manakin-Sabot, home of Pierre Chastain. It seems my Dad almost went full circle in his search for his heritage.

Based on info acquired from family search.com, I am a descendant of Pierre. My father had told my mother that he had some French background but even he had no specific knowledge of it. Another great reason for the Internet! I found out w/o even having to leave home. I was even more surprised when I found out there was a Pierre Chastain website. How often is a reunion held (even tho I don't know whether or not I could make one!)? But it sure is great to be able to get so much info. Another irony is that I have always been a bit of an iconoclast (against total conformity/oppression), but I come by it naturally, with people on both sides having left their native land because of religious persecution. I hope at least to see the original town in Virginia someday; that would be something, especially since history is my very favorite thing.
Thanks for having this great website.

It's interesting to find that after searching for relatives on the maternal side of my family that I find the Chastains very nearby in SC. I wondered what had become of the Chastains. They had all but disappeared from public records in Virginia. My ggggg grandfather, Jacques Briand (James Bryant, Sr) was witness to the will of Dr. Pierre Chastain.

I enjoyed this website very much. I am interested in finding out how Elijah Webb Chastain might be related to my uncle, Thomas Wade Allen, of Fannin County, GA. I think E.W. was either his grandfather or great-grandfather. Uncle Wade never talked much about it, and passed away last year. When he passed, we found some papers that led us to E.W. Chastain. Can anyone help me make the connection?

I'm so glad to have learned about your site. It should be very helpful in piecing together my genealogy. My grandmother was Addie Josephine Chasteen. In 1902 she migrated by covered wagon from Black Rock, Lawrence Co, Ark. to Indian Territory with her parents, Clark Christopher Columbus Chasteen and Martha Ann Richey. Clark was born in 1866 in Stockton, Greene Co, Indiana to Robert R. Chastain and Perlina Franklin. From here it gets a little shakier. I believe Robert R. was born in 1832 in Stockton, Green Co, Indiana. Robert R. may have been the son of John (wife Elizabeth Toney) who may have been the son of Robert Ranson (wife Magdalin Moore) who may have been the son of William (wife Sara Ellen Barnett) who may have been the son of Pierre Peter Chastain (wife Mildred Archer). I have no proof yet of any of the last part of this, but am working on it. I'm on the newsletter mailing list now and look forward to learning more. Also plan to look into the books on the website. Thanks for all your work.

I was introduced to the PCFA by a cousin, Marlon Schumann Williams (deceased), who had attended a few family reunions. She would be so proud of this website.
My family line, I think, is (1) Pierre, the Immigrant and Ann Soblet, (2) Peter Jr. and Mildred Archer, (3) John TSB and Mary O Bryan, (4) Joseph Chastain and Nancy Young, (5) Jeremiah Chastain and Tabitha Young, (6) Daniel Roland Chastain and Julia Ann Renfro--had 6 daughters and no sons, (7) Sadie Lee Chastain and William C. Dickbreder, (8) Billy D. Dickbreder and Martha Antrim, (9) Dorothy Dickbreder Palmer (no children). My Grandmother Sadie took me to the Old Tebo Church and Cemetery as a child and I have visited the "moved" church and cemetery near Leesville, MO. Do you know of any information connecting Nancy Young and Tabitha Young--spouses listed above? |

Hey there! Just found your site-can't believe I haven't seen it before as I've been searching for my family history for a long, long time. My father was Jimmie Dee Chastain, born in Oklahoma in the 1920's. He was a musician and singer-he played with 'The Sons of the Pioneers' and even opened for the rat pack in las vegas in the 60's! I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters and are hoping to find more information about our family history. Keep up the good work-this site is super cool. I had no idea there were so many of us out there!

I'm working on my family geneology. This informaiton is quite a find for me. I am also a decendent of Pierre Chastain. The Reverend John "Ten Shilling Bell" is my 6th great grandfather. I am decendent from his son Elijah (brother of Abner). I've lived in the Atlanta area all my life and have visited Chastain Park thousands of times. I never knew it was named for someone to which I am related. Great information. Great webstite.

I wasn't one of the original members but joined the Pierre Chastain Family Association about a month later. I was editor of The Chestnut Tree three different times covering about 15 years and was editor of the Chastain books. My grandmother Flora Chastain Moody started not only my interest in genealogy but also my daughter's interest in genealogy. My daughter is Jeanne Short and she just recently created the most beautiful Chastain scrapbook on our Chastain line. It covers 15 generations of Chastains from the 3 generations in France down to a very precocious 3-year old grandson of my daughter's named Cameron Chase Saldivar. This is a wonderful way to combine photos with genealogical research.

Been curious about this for years. Stumbled on a history of Carolina in grad school that listed Pierre and David Chastaigneur getting off the boat in Charles Town. Evidently David was childless. My grandfather came from NE Georgia, always told my grandmother he was "scotch-irish" but I think the surname gives it away.

I am a Great-great-great-great-great-great granddaughter of Rene "Rane" Chastain. His granddaughter Lydia married Thomas Maxey and had Raney Maxey and he had Raney Chastain Jr. who had James Frank Maxey who had Ove Maxey who had my dad Rexell Chastain Maxey. And my father carried the name on with my brother Randy Chastain Maxey who then named his son Dakota Levi Chastain Maxey. My father and I always talked about going to VA to check things out but we never got the chance. He past away almost 3 years ago. I hope someday to be able to go and see the home place. I don't think he even know the house was still standing. I am so glad the family has fixed this site. I have really enjoyed learning more about Rene and Pierre.

I stumbled onto your site and it's great. I'm hoping to find the correct connection of my husband's grandmother to Dr. Pierre Chastain. His grandmother's name was Lora Velma Chastain and she lived in Birmingham, AL. It looks like Rev John "Ten Shilling Bell" Chastain (1743-1805)& Mary Ann O'Bryan (1744-1790): Abner Henley Chastain Sr (1764-1846)& Rachel Barnes (1765-1854): Abner Henley Chastain Jr (1791-1883)& Nancy ?: James Chastain (1812-1893)& Delphia Dewberry (1814-1892): Benjamin Franlin Chastain (1845-1914) & Julia Ann Meadows Smith (?): Lora Velma Chastain (1866-1965) & George Frank Long (?): Johnny Thomas Long Sr (1916-1971)& Mary Etta McCollum (1923): David Franklin Long (1942) & Marci Moritz (1946). Hopefully I've provided enough information. We've got a forms ready to mail to attend the 2010 reunion in Dalton and to join PCFA.

My Name is Mike VanDorn. Over the years I've often thought about Til [Tilfer Chastain]. He was a awful kind hearted man.
How did I know Til? I was his guitar player for a couple years before he died. We played several clubs in the South East side of Wisconsin and Minnesota. I also played guitar for him for two of his songs that he wrote, I still have one of the 45's that we did. Til gave me a demo copy before he had it printed. The songs that are on the 45 are Put Some Country On This Country Boy and Moment of Truth. Til was also inducted into the Song Writers Hall of Fame in Nashville. Til also Wrote There She Goes. He sold all the rights to that song for $300. Two weeks after he sold it the record sold ten million copies. I don't recall the artist that bought the rights but he sure got a deal. Til was fine with what he got as well. There is more to the story but its not important. The important thing is that he is remembered. Thanks for listening and thanks for sharing!!! Mike

My GG grandfather was David Brown who was married to Rhoda Chastain. David was born abt 1795 in western NC and Rhoda was born abt 1807,in probably, the Old Pendleton District, SC. David and Rhoda sold their 107 acre parcel of land in Haywood County, NC, in 1833, to Henry Plott, and removed to Union County, GA.
David Brown and Milton Brown appear in the 1834 census for Union County, GA, along with three Chastains - Edward, Abner, and John B. Chastain. They were among the original settlers of Union County. There is a good possibility that David and Milton Brown were brothers but we have no documented evidence to prove this. According to Mrs. Ethelene Dyer Jones's article on the Union County, GA, website, Edward Brigand Chastain is the Edward Chastain in the 1834 census. He died soon after. Abner and John B. are his sons. Also, Mrs. Jones says that Edward Brigand Chastain and Hannah Brown, his wife, were believed to have had sixteen children but records show that they had only fifteen. My cousins and I have been exploring the possibility that Rhoda Chastain may have been a daughter of Edward Brigand Chastain. After going over all the material that we can find on the Chastains, this is where we think she might possibly belong. Could my Rhoda be the missing sixteenth child of Edward Brigand? Her birth year fits. Thank you. Bob Brown |

Found article in NC library stated two daughters names not known. Jemima was supposedly named after her grandmother, Jemima Denton? who married John Chastain. Could this be my missing link? Great Site.

I'm looking for confirmation of my lineage to Rev. John Chastain of Pumpkintown. I have found sources showing from my great grandfather (Marion Larkin Chastain) and his father (Louis Napoleon Chastain married to Hannah Twigg). I believe Louis's father was Raney Lafayette. Can anyone confirm that for me? I was told by my grandmother that Louis N. (Poley) was buried in Murphy, NC and that matches with the research on Poley son of Raney.
Thanks so much, Chad |

Hello Chastain Brothers, I really enjoy you web-site!!!! In The guestbook, there is a message from a Teri Chastain in Springfield Mo, her grandfather, (my grandfather) was James Arthur Chastain, his first Wife was Florence and she is buried now near Mack's Creek Mo. My Father is Harvey Lee Chastain, her father's brother. My father was a preacher for many years. Our grandfather went by Arthur, even though his name was James Arthur, his mother was Rhoda Hill and she was 1/2 Cherokee. Arthur & Florence had 6 sons and one daughter, they divorced in the early 50's and Arthur remarried and had 6 more sons and one more daughter. Aunt Ruthie lives just outside of Mack's Creek. My dad has the book The Chestnut Tree, and she is listed in it! Hope this helps.

Rev. John Chastain grave and related graves
I signed the guestbook recently, and went searching for the grave of Rev. John Chastain my gggg grandfather), located in Pickens County, SC. I did locate his grave and was so happy to see it at last. On the way back, I was travelling up Hwy 288 (Table Rock Road) near Pumpkintown, in Pickens County, and happened upon a Family Cemetery alongside the road. There were two well-kept plots - one Rev. Maxwell Chastain, and the second Edward Chastain - of an age to have been grandchildren of Rev. John, which I suspect they were. Also, on this site were 6 or 7 "slab rock" graves, crumbling in, no markers, and covered completely with moss - very, very old. Can anyone help me place Maxwell and Edward in the family, and/or give me a clue about the ancient moss covered graves? |

Nancy A. Chastain for the DAR
I am a descendant of Nancy A. Chastain wife of Samuel B. West, and am looking for either a birth certificate, marriage license or will that will give me documented proof that she was the daughter of Benjamin Chastain and Rebeckah Denton Chastain. I am applying for DAR membership and this is the only line that I have not been able to find the documented proof that DAR requires. For some reason, my DAR representative said that the book, Pierre Chastain and His Descendants, was not documented proof. I have hit a brick wall and need help. Thanks, Martha Allred |

Rev. John Chastain
Hi everyone - I am happy to have found this site.. Rev. John Chastain is my 4-greats grandfather, descended through Rev. Benjamin and Rebecca Denton Chastain; their son Jonathan Davis (or David) Chastain and Rachel Stover Chastain; their daughter Rebecca Chastain Kimmons and William Kimmons; their son, Jonathan Bunyan Kimmons and Laura Jane Cantrell Kimmons; and their son, James Edward Kimmons and Margaret Mae Owens Kimmons -- my parents. Saying hello to all the kith and kin...I have not actively pursued genealogy since the 80's due to ill health - but recently connected Rev. John to Oolenoy Baptist Church, which he organized in 1795, in what would have been the Pickens or Pendleton District of South Carolina. I see notes that mention his headstone, but I've never seen a picture of it. Anyone able to give me a link to a picture of his marker or its exact location? Thx. |
