Hello fellow Chastain's. Just wanted to add another Chastain to the Guest book. I was doing my research online and determined that I am a descendant by way of Richard Chastain, son of Wade Allen chastain, son of Wade Harris Chastain, son of John Basil Chastain, son of John C. Chastain, son of Edward 'ned' Chastain, son of Abner Chastain Sr., son of John ' ten shilling bell' Chastain, who is the son of Pierre/Peter chastain who is the son of Pierre Chastain. My parents were friends with Burrell and Helen Chastain. My dad managed the Donut Dinette and took ownership from Herb Waters for a year, before losing it back to him, afterwhich, is was purchased by the Chastains.
I remember Mickey Evans, who broadcast her music, atop the Chastain's sign and we lived on the east end of Orlando with our own restaurant, Laura's, for 12 years. So, we loved Chastain's, but weren't regulars. I found this site, enjoyable and nostalgic with information I wasn't aware of, but I was thoroughly entertained. I'd like to add that I was with Chris Miliotes (Chris' House of Beef)for six years in his Mr.Dunderbak's operations, from its beginning in Orlando. I'm still in restaurant mgmt.at 63. |

Great site! My great grandmother, Susie CHESTINE, was born about 1884 and passed away in September 1907. She married Thomas Robert HOUSTON and they had one child, James Earnest HOUSTON, in 1905. She is buried in the Woods Chapel Cemetery in Greene County, AR. Susie's last name has been spelled many different ways (CHESTINE/CHASTAIN/CHESTEEN/SHASTEEN/ETC) over the years and I'm not sure that anyone alive knows the true spelling. The only other family name close in that cemetery is SHASTEEN (Tom and Lousinda). I wonder if they could be related. My grandfather was raised by his father's second wife and neither my mother nor I have ever heard any one speak of Susie CHESTINE's family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was just looking to see if the Orlando Chastain's Restaurant was still around. My daddy passed away last Thanksgiving and I have fond memories of him taking me there. Seems everything in Orlando has changed. The navy base is now a beautiful community called Baldwin Park, all but one of the restaurants I enjoyed is gone (La Cantina remains), Colonial Plaza is unrecognizable, Winter Park Mall too. Longing for the "good old days" I guess, when things were simpler, and people seemed to care more about each other. I sure do miss that diner. Wish I had been around & had the resources to rescue it.

Madye Lee Chastain's triology, "Emmy Keeps A Promise", "Dark Treasure", & "The Magic Island" are among my favorite books. As a child, I loved the stories, characters & 1850's New York. I was lucky to find copies of these books & treasure them.
When I first moved to New York in the 1980's I rented part of a loft on White Street; the same street that Arabel & Emmy lived! I live near the city & sometimes visit Old Merchant's house museum. It reminds me of the Spenlow house. i'm a published author & illustrator. Presently, I'm making my own animated film. It's an jazz musical short; set in the 1930's. Duke Ellington's & Fred Astaire are my inspirations. I always felt that the Emmy-Lisa Books would be fabulous as a PBS type Series...or produced like the Anne of Green Gables series, a marvelous Canadian production from 1980's. I'd like to contact Roxana Bartlett to inquire if she'd like to see these wonderful stories in film...or anyone else. There's too much pop culture influence in children's films today. The Emmy- Lisa stories would be very inspiring to all ages. Sincerely, Mimi Brennan email:mimiproductions@earthlink.net |

Oscar for Jessica Chastain!
Saw the movie today. Jessica Chastain far exceeded my expectations in her portrayal of Celia Foote, my personal favorite character in the book. Celia's role was abridged in the transition from book to film, but the character shines in the movie because of Jessica Chastain's brilliant performance. As other fine actresses in the film get Oscar mentions in the press, my own choice is Jessica Chastain! |
||||||||||
|
Unfortunately, up until last night I was not aware of Jessica. But after seeing "The Help" I am a huge fan. I love what she brought to her character. She was my favorite! This morning I googled jessica to see what other films she has been in. I will now rent a few this weekend to see her work as other characters. Best wishes to Jessica in all her future endeavors...I Am certain she will be a huge success!!

I am seeking a connection of Capt Benjamin Chastain to a Moore female around 1870, that came to Colorado Territory with my line of Moores. We moved out of Blairsville GA that year, I wondered why? We were "The Georgia Colony miners" who first found gold in Ralston Creek (now Cherry Creek,Denver) in 1859 with Wm. Green Russell and my lateral relative Joseph Decatur Patterson. 500 GA men and 35 Cherokee came here, I would love to be in contact with all associated. My kindest reguards! Thank you!!!

I have enjoyed researching my family history. For many years, I had zero knowledge of my father's side of the family (Larry L. Chestein). I felt as if I knew they were strong roots especially as an adult. I felt I just wasn't ANYTHING like my mom sides. lol After doing research, I'm extremly excited to see I was correct & what a great feelings:) I would like to thank all those who spent many hours of dedicated researching to make this possible. W/out your efforts I still would be having a nagging feeling of confusion. If anyone has any additional info I would greatly appreciate it. Could anyone say when the name spelling went from Chastain to Chestein? & why maybe?
Sincerely, Karen D McAbee (Chestein) |

I am a descendant of James Richard Vest and Dinah Chastain. I believe Dinah fits into the Pierre Louis Chastain lineage. She apparently was born about 1740-45, d., by 1795, was not listed in his will, only that several boys, including my Little Berry Vest, Sr., werre left orphans. Tale has it brother John had ran off from his placement back to Chesterfield to be with family, Rane, Rene,. James & Dinah used the names of Rane, John, and James in their children's names. I have not found one researcher that has named her, but I wholeheartedly believe she fits. She and James Richard married in Chesterfiled (County), and died there. James Richard Vest comes from John Vest and Charlotte Ann Bakes, down to my maternal grandfather Grover Cleveland Vest (1895) B, mo., my mother Katherine Louise Vest (Lundhoy). Again Thanks for any help.....

Okay...hope you all are REALLY connected and knowledgable. I would be very grateful if you could help me find CHERYL CHASTAIN who lived in Miami, Oklahoma in 1960's and 70's. She had a brother DAVID, another brother STEVE, and I believe her dad is ERNEST CHASTAIN. Her middle name is MARIE (I think)...and married a BRAD JONES?? at some point. She would be 56 years old now. She lived at 1815 G Street NW, in Miami, OKlahoma...and went to Will Rogers Jr. High School, and Miami High School, briefly. Can you help me find her?
At one time she had a family history on Ancestry.com.....but I can't locate her now. Like I said...I would be very grateful. If you are wondering...we grew up together. |

Hi, I am researching for my dau-in-law. I think I have found a Shasteen/Chasteen connection, hoping someone might be able to give me further info. I have a Sadie Chasteen that married a Charles W. Patton in Scott Co., IN on 10 Jan 1898. Any one have any info on her? If she is the right one she moved north. Is she the d/o of Ephraim Shasteen? I think she is in Jennings Co by 1900 living with her husband and daughter within her father in laws home. Then by 1910 she is in Marion Co., IN with her 4 Patton children, remarried to another man Harry Mowry. What happened to Charles Patton? They divorce? He die?

my entire life i have been amazed that I never met another person with the same last name, well it turns out there aren't any. We are of course Chastain's through my great-great grandfather William Chastain of Anderson, SC. At some point the name became Chestein during my grand-father's life, he was W L Chestein of Laurens, SC. Then when my grandfather registered for the draft during WWI and "e" was added to the end of the name and we became "Chesteine".

Hello From the Land down under!!!I am the grand daughter of the late Alice Chastain and Joe Young, one of 9 grand children, I have recently been tracing the family tree as I was adopted out in 1967 or so ( due my fathers absence to war and my mothers lack of literacy), I was born with a mild disabilty as so was a few others in my family, however it has not stopped me from getting on in life, I was born north of Atlanta since then I have had 3 beautiful children and 4 grandchildren of my own, I have spent my life caring for my Mother and father and kids , along with persuing a career in Nursing, I moved to Australia 5 years ago, and now I work in the disadvantaged communities of the Aboriginal people, I am currently obtaining a Diploma in Aboriginal research and studies, I see where the goals in my life come from it must be something hereditary, Im glad to have found this page and to know one more of many of my family members has my determination to change the lives of others for the better, goes to show we are a tough mob... like many disadvantaged people of this world..... feel free to contact me via e-mail I would like to learn more about your programs and if you ave interests in me and my goals, we are in desperate needs of good programs here in Australia for the disadvantaged especially the native Australians......God Bless All Lawanda Newham Sydney Australia lnewham1979@yahoo.com.au |

"DeStaing LeSueur, great-great-grandson of Elizabeth and David through their son, Samuel LeSueur, ran a store and post office in Alabama."
Does anyone know why this child was named d'Estaing? I am at a dead end with my ancestor Thomas Easton/Eastin of Albemarle VA, some *say* b 1725 from Devon, England-- I have *never* come across anyone with a source for *any* birthdate or marriage or emigration. Some say our last name "Eastin" is a re-arrangement of d'Estaing and that Thomas was the child of a man named "Jean d'Estaing with Philippe ______". No sources *ever* for that either. Anyone know anything about my Thomas Easton/Eastin? |

I am doing research on my husband's family. Surnames: Berrong, Chastain, Corn,Hooper, and Cordell. I know that his mother was Ruth Alice Cordell, dau of Jesse Clayborn Cordell and Louise Jane Corn. Louisa J. Corn was the dau of Solomon Smith Corn and Lydia Berrong, who was the dau of Jesse Berrong and Susannah Chastain. Susannah was the dau of Benjamin Chastain and Nancy Hooper. Ruth's sister Pearl Hasletine Cordell married a Frank Chastain in Oklahoma. Haven't figured out where Frank's family comes into the Chastain Tree just yet. Anyone with an idea?

As far as I know I may have a rich uncle who is just waiting to leave my family a big inheritance. LOL Just kidding. I have been moderately poor all of my life and don't plan on being rich anytime soon. I just want to see if I can find any Chastains that are related to me. My dad was born in Birmingham AL and I hear that his father commited suicide when he was very young so he was pretty much raised by a step dad. I hope to hear more about this as I would like to find any family that is realted to me. I believe I was found by a cousin on facebook. My sister seems to know more about the family than I do. Her name is Margie Ellen Chastain. |

Hi. I saw that you were wondering if any descendant of the Chastains lived in Hawaii. We recently moved from Cal. to Hawaii. Don't know if my husband (Melvin Chasteen) is the only one or not. The reason for the move is that Mel is now pastor of Ewa Beach Baptist Church.

My great-great-great grandmother was Sarah Jane Chastain (1/7/1833-3/31/1912). She was married to Elias Duncan (8/31/1831-2/4/1883). They lived in Washington County Indianna & Afton, OK areas. Sarah's father was Peter G Chastain (3/14/1808-7/18/1879). I traced the Chastain line back to Jean Chastain (1544-1/6/1581) in Paris, France on Ancestry.com. I had no idea that I had relatives in America predating the Revolutionary War. This is very exciting to me.

My son Edward Chandler ("Teddy") Tedholm is a 19-year-old dance major at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and has been featured several times on the hit TV show, "So You Think You Can Dance." My 27-year-old daughter, Miranda Joy Tedholm, is a PhD candidate at Indiana University in Bloomington, attending on a full fellowship. Both of my children are 10th-generation descendants of Pierre Chastain. Hope to see you soon online! |

I would love to know which of the sons my family comes from. My Father, Leaford Marion Chastain, and his family lived first in Georgia, then moved to Oklahoma, then to Missouri, and finally my Father moved to Virginia in the mid 1930's. He lived from 1911 until 1985 and he never knew how close he was to finding his Pierre! As is so happens Louisa the place where he died was not that far from Manakin-Sabot, home of Pierre Chastain. It seems my Dad almost went full circle in his search for his heritage.

Based on info acquired from family search.com, I am a descendant of Pierre. My father had told my mother that he had some French background but even he had no specific knowledge of it. Another great reason for the Internet! I found out w/o even having to leave home. I was even more surprised when I found out there was a Pierre Chastain website. How often is a reunion held (even tho I don't know whether or not I could make one!)? But it sure is great to be able to get so much info. Another irony is that I have always been a bit of an iconoclast (against total conformity/oppression), but I come by it naturally, with people on both sides having left their native land because of religious persecution. I hope at least to see the original town in Virginia someday; that would be something, especially since history is my very favorite thing.
Thanks for having this great website.

It's interesting to find that after searching for relatives on the maternal side of my family that I find the Chastains very nearby in SC. I wondered what had become of the Chastains. They had all but disappeared from public records in Virginia. My ggggg grandfather, Jacques Briand (James Bryant, Sr) was witness to the will of Dr. Pierre Chastain.

I enjoyed this website very much. I am interested in finding out how Elijah Webb Chastain might be related to my uncle, Thomas Wade Allen, of Fannin County, GA. I think E.W. was either his grandfather or great-grandfather. Uncle Wade never talked much about it, and passed away last year. When he passed, we found some papers that led us to E.W. Chastain. Can anyone help me make the connection?

I'm so glad to have learned about your site. It should be very helpful in piecing together my genealogy. My grandmother was Addie Josephine Chasteen. In 1902 she migrated by covered wagon from Black Rock, Lawrence Co, Ark. to Indian Territory with her parents, Clark Christopher Columbus Chasteen and Martha Ann Richey. Clark was born in 1866 in Stockton, Greene Co, Indiana to Robert R. Chastain and Perlina Franklin. From here it gets a little shakier. I believe Robert R. was born in 1832 in Stockton, Green Co, Indiana. Robert R. may have been the son of John (wife Elizabeth Toney) who may have been the son of Robert Ranson (wife Magdalin Moore) who may have been the son of William (wife Sara Ellen Barnett) who may have been the son of Pierre Peter Chastain (wife Mildred Archer). I have no proof yet of any of the last part of this, but am working on it. I'm on the newsletter mailing list now and look forward to learning more. Also plan to look into the books on the website. Thanks for all your work.
