Chastain Generals
Pierre Chastain died in 1728, almost 50 years before the Revolution, but at least three of his grandsons and three great-grandsons served in the war. There were likely others we do not know about. We welcome your submission of sources or individual information.
PCD is Pierre Chastain and His Descendants, three volumes, by the Pierre Chastain Family Association. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) do not list every individual who served or assisted in the Revolution, but only those whose descendants have submitted information. You may go to the DAR website to check for your ancestor or to learn more about the NSDAR.
Castaing, Peter, French volunteer, aide de camp to French Gen. Louis Duportail. Present at Valley Forge and taken prisoner at Charleston in 1780. He is listed on the Valley Forge Muster Roll as a 2nd Lieut. According to the DAR, Captain Castaing served from Massachusetts, was born in France about 1740, and died in Great Britain in 1800. Listed as a Patriot by DAR. See also Live Auctioneers and the Writings of George Washington.
Chastain, Peter (2-Rene, 1-Pierre), PCD, vol 1, page 47. Served as a private from South Carolina under Captain Leroy Hammond. Listed as a Patriot by DAR
Chastain, Stephen (3-Rene, Jr., 2-Rene, 1-Pierre), PCD, vol 1, page 122. Served in the Virginia Militia in 1780 and 1781, though apparently not actively. Not listed at DAR.

Chasteen, James. Lowell B. Chastain states, "James Chasteen of Amherst County, Va. was a Revolutionary War soldier. His records can be obtained from the National Archives, Pension No. W. 2917, which states 'he was a Private in the regiment commanded by Col. Taylor..., and enlisted...in 1777 as a Private in Capt. Holman Rice's Company in Colonel Francis Taylor's Virginia Regiment and served three years...later he enlisted in Captain Robert Kirk's Company in Armond's Corps of Horse. He was in the Siege of Yorktown and was discharged the following day after the surrender by General Cornwallis." [no closing quotes to National Archives, so unsure of end of quoted material], (Lowell B. Chastain, Virginia Chastains, Self Published, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, 1983, pp 136, 137.) James is listed as a Patriot by DAR with a Virginia birthdate of 1761 and a Kentucky decease date of February 28, 1841. His wife is listed as Nancy Kennedy.
Shasteen, Jesse, Identified as a Revolutionary War Veteran in numerous places. Not listed at DAR.

In addition to those who served in the military, other Chastains are noted for involvement in the Revolution:
Chastain, Jean, Jr. (2-Jean, 1-Pierre). PCD, vol 1, page 24. Supplied 275 pounds of beef to Bedford County, Virginia for soldiers of the Revolution. Listed as a Patriot by DAR.
Chastain, Rev. John (2-Pierre, Jr., 1-Pierre). PCD, vol. 1 page 31. Was named a patriot when he signed the oath of allegiance in Powhatan County, Virginia during the war. Listed as a Patriot by DAR.
After the Revolutionary War and American Independence from Great Britain, relationships between the two countries were strained, but when Britain went to war with France (Napoleon) the United States remained neutral. However, interruption of American shipping and especially the raiding of American ships to impress American sailors into British service brought the two countries into another war. As part of the war, the United States tried, but failed, to conquer Canada. The US capitol was burned by the British, but in the end the young nation stood against the full force of the British Empire.
Results of the War of 1812 included strengthened feelings of nationalism both in the USA and in Canada, the birth of the Star Spangled Banner, loss of power among Indian tribes in the Midwest and the South, the maturing of the American military and navy, and the rise to prominence of William Henry Harrison and Andrew Jackson.

Just prior to his engagement of British forces during the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson pursued a war against the Creeks in the South, whom he defeated soundly.
Pierre Chastang, a respected slave in Mobile, Alabama, was appointed by Jackson as patroon or captain of a government transport to carry provisions to the troops. Pierre was later freed because of this and other very dangerous public service.
Andrew Jackson had his own solution to conflict that arose when the growing American population put pressure on Indian lands. Relocate the Indians and give their lands to white folks!
In 1838 the Cherokees were removed from their lands in Georgia and marched along the Trail of Tears to be relocated in what is now Oklahoma. Their lands were made available to white settlers, and many Chastains took advantage of the situation. In fact, this area still has the largest concentration of Chastains anywhere. But the settling of the Indian lands is a story for another time. Here we deal with the removal. Even before the deportation, forts and encompments were established to gather and hold the Cherokee as illegal settlers began filtering in. One of these was Fort Chastain in present-day Fannin County, Georgia. Chastains served in the East Tennessee Cherokee Removal Militia which escorted the Cherokee to the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).
PCD is Pierre Chastain and His Descendants, three volumes, by the Pierre Chastain Family Association. We welcome your submission of sources or individual information.
Chastain, Jacin, served in Campbell Company, East Tennessee Cherokee Removal Militia.
Chastain, Jason Coward (5-John, 4-Edward Brigand, 3-John, 2-Peter, Jr., 1-Pierre), perhaps the same as Jacin, above, PCD, Vol. 2, page 89.
Chastain, William D. (4-Joseph, 3-John, 2-Peter, Jr., 1-Pierre), served in Vernon Company, PCD, Vol. 1, page 187; East Tennessee Cherokee Removal Militia.
Chasten, George W., served in Vernon Company, East Tennessee Cherokee Removal Militia.
Denton, Jonas (4-Elizabeth, 3-John, 2-Peter, Jr., 1-Pierre), served in Terry Company, PCD, Vol. 1, page 174; East Tennessee Cherokee Removal Militia.
As terrible as the Cherokee removal was, the attempted removal of the Seminoles from Florida was much more violent. Three sons and a son-in-law of Georgia politician Benjamin Chastain fought in the Seminole wars.
Chastain, Benjamin Franklin (4-Benjamin, 3-John, 2-Peter, Jr., 1-Pierre), Adjutant Major in General Nelson's Brigade. PCD, Vol. 1, page 181.
Chastain, Elijah Webb (4-Benjamin, 3-John, 2-Peter, Jr., 1-Pierre), Formed a company and was elected Captain; later became Colonel of a Regiment. PCD, Vol. 1, page 182.
Chastain, John Bunyan (4-Benjamin, 3-John, 2-Peter, Jr., 1-Pierre), Captain in General Nelson's Brigade. PCD, Vol. 1, page 179.
Kincaid, James (husband of 5-Martha, 4-Benjamin, 3-John, 2-Peter, Jr., 1-Pierre), PCD, Vol. 1, page 184.
Chastain, John Madison (4-John, 3-Peter, 2-Rene, 1-Pierre) served in Dennard's Georgia Volunteers in the (presumably Seminole) Indian Wars in 1836. PCD, addenda to Volume 1, page 120.
The Independent State of Texas had separated from Mexico some years before. Now the United States accepted the Texans' request to be annexed to the United States. Both Mexico and Great Britain were much opposed to the annexation. The United States also feared that Britain had designs on Mexico's California section. The Americans offered to purchase California from Mexico, but Mexico refused.
The Mexican war served to provide experience to those who would later lead the armies of the Civil War.
Chastain, Joseph Inman (4-Elisha, 3-Abraham, 2-Peter, Jr., 1-Pierre), PCD, Vol. 1, page 192.
Shasteen, John King Max Pages
LeSueur, Charles Marion (4-Littleberry LeSueur, 3-Peter LeSueur, 2-Elizabeth, 1-Pierre), served under Captain Jefferson Davis. PCD, addenda to Volume 1, page 109.

Identical names appear more than once on state rosters. These may be different individuals or the same person serving in two outfits. Identical names are listed here only once, but each source is indicated. Details are found in the various sources. However, all variations that may be the same person (B. F. Chastain and Benjamin F. Chastain) are listed separately.
Check all spellings, as the same person is frequently listed with different spellings. For example Abner H. Castin, Abner H. Chassteen, and Abner H. Chastine of the Arkansas 2nd Regiment Cavalry (Union) is likely the same soldier. In fact, he may be identical to the Abner H. Chasteen and the A. H. Chesteen of the Arkansas Infantry (Confederate), because Southerners with Union sympathies often were drafted into the Confederate Army until they had opportunity to defect to Union forces.
States with links are to individual state lists. Some list only names and units, but others have details on the soldier himself. In addition, you should search the National Park Service Civil War Soldiers list.
