07-04-07 Joey Chestnut Defeats Takeru Kobayashi (SierraTimes.com - USA) In a gut-busting showdown that combined drama, daring and indigestion, Joey Chestnut emerged Wednesday as the world's hot dog eating champion, knocking off six-time winner Takeru Kobayashi in a record-setting yet repulsive triumph. Chestnut, the great red, white and blue hope in the annual Fourth of July competition, broke his own world record by inhaling 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes — a staggering one every 10.9 seconds before a screaming crowd in Coney Island. "If I needed to eat another one right now, I could," the 23-year-old Californian said after receiving the mustard yellow belt emblematic of hot dog eating supremacy...The two gustatory gladiators quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the 17 competitors, processing more beef than a slaughterhouse within the first few minutes. The two had each downed 60 hot dogs with 60 seconds to go when Chestnut — the veins on his forehead extended — put away the final franks to end Kobayashi's reign. Full Story Back to Top

06-17-07 Casey Chasteen Shares Goat-Tying Strategy (Columbia Missourian - Columbia, MO) Casey Chasteen of Rock Bridge High School and Kaley Cobb of Montgomery County R-II High School have competed in goat tying since elementary school. In high school rodeo, the tyer rides a horse from the holding stall to the goat, which is on a 10-foot leash tied to a stake. The tyer jumps off, tackles and ties the goat. The goat must remain tied for six seconds to count. Because the event results are based on time, and getting off properly and quickly is essential...The horses must be taught how to cooperate and allow the rider to dismount easily. Chasteen said she tends to scoot to one side of her saddle to let the horse know she wants to get off. “You want the horse to pause in stride so you can get off safely. You have to train your horse to do this,” Chasteen said. “I tend to just move over in my saddle though.” Chasteen gave a quick summary of how the goat-tying process works, followed up with a slow motion demonstration. First, the goat tyer runs from the horse to the stake and straddles the leash. “You want to go right there, because your legs can catch the rope so the goat can’t run too far away,” she said. “If you don’t, you could be running around in circles chasing it.” She placed her right hand under the goat’s right hind leg and her left hand on its left front leg. Then, she squatted down, picked up the animal and used her knees to lay it on its side. From there, she pulled the rope from her mouth and tied the animal’s two hind legs and right front leg together. Full Story Back to Top

She also qualified for and competed in the National High School Finals Rodeo last year in the breakaway roping, goat tying, and cutting events. Full Story Back to Top

05-30-07 Chastain Motorsports Sponsor Does not Benefit from Entire Race (Computing - London, UK) The first Linux-sponsored car in the Indianapolis 500 was also the first car to crash at the event on Sunday. A Tux500 internet campaign raised enough funds to put the penguin logo on the front of the Chastain Motorsports car. But the car crashed on the infamous first corner less than a quarter of the way through the 500-mile race. The Tux500 project was the brainchild of two enthusiasts, Bob Moore and Ken Starks, and was set up with the intention of raising $350,000 and building a Team Linux car. In the end the project raised just $18,308 and settled for a sticker on the front of Chastain Motorsports car No.77, driven by Roberto Moreno. Full Story Back to Top

05-28-07 Chastain Motor Sports Does Not Make it at Indy (Indianapolis Star - Indianapolis, IN) Team owner Thomas Chastain had not raced since 1998, but the retired 64-year-old electrician who started with a race shop in a Noblesville barn was determined to take his best shot this May against the "big boys." Most of his team's $600,000 budget came out of his pocket, from his Miller-Eads electrical company. The goals were to qualify in the first five rows, lead the race and finish in the top 10. When Moreno got high in the groove and crashed on lap 37, Chastain had to take a long walk back to the garage and accept that he failed in each endeavor...The man who got hooked in 1958 while staring through a fence at mechanics tinkering on cars plans to make one more run. Next year, he said, will be his last shot. "I can't justify the amount of money spent, but you only go around once," Chastain said. "I've got one more bullet to put in my gun because after that, the cost of racing will be completely out of my reach." Full Story Back to Top
05-18-07 Roberto Moreno Will Substitute for Injured Chastain Motorsports Driver (Indianapolis Motor Speedway - Indianapolis, IN) Roberto Moreno, who last started in the Indianapolis 500 in 1999, will take over the seat May 19. He will be required to conduct a refresher program before attempting to make the 33-car field in Third Day Qualifying...Chastain, who formed Chastain Motorsports to field a car in the 1997 and '98 Indy Car Series seasons, recruited crew chief Darrell Soppe and Gregoire (both from the original team) to compete in the 91st 500-Mile Race with its original number and blue livery. With Gregoire, the team finished in the top 10 in half of its races. Gregoire started 13th and finished 31st (accident) in the 1997 race. "It is very unfortunate that (Gregoire) couldn't proceed with us," Chastain said. 05-14-07 Chastain Motorsports Prepares for Race, But Sponsorship Funding Lags (Linux PR (press release) - Darien, CT) Saturday and Sunday went by with little fanfare for the Linux-sponsored Chastain Motorsports team, although the team logged a lot of laps, in an effort to get the car up to speed to qualify next weekend. For those who don't know how things work at Indy, there are 4 days of qualifications. Two down, two to go. The team found their best lap of the month near the end of the day on Sunday, a lap of 220.243 mph. This shows that they are making steady improvements to the car, and based on the rate of progress they have made so far, they should be able to find 1 or 2 more mph before Saturday. This would safely land the car in the race...From a personal standpoint, I feel like we're letting the team down. Tom Chastain has put a lot of faith in our community, and has given us prime placement on the car. For the amount of money we've raised, it's much more than we deserve. Tom likes what we're trying to do... he likes being associated with the "Little Guy," and he likes the fact that this is a community effort. But racing takes money... a lot more than the amount we've raised. Full Story Back to Top
05-13-07 Eric Chastain Wins Championship After Opponent Loses Control (Chattanooganow (subscription) - Chattanooga, TN) Chattanooga Christian senior tennis player Eric Chastain won last year's Class A/AA state singles championship after his opponent was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct during the second set of the title match. "I had won the first set 7-6," Chastain said. "During the second, he started showing more emotion and getting more frustrated. There was a point where he went off and just lost it completely." In tennis, a player exhibiting unsportsmanlike conduct is first deducted a game point. If the behavior continues, he or she can be penalized by awarding the game to the opponent, and then by defaulting the match. Chastain said the player began swearing at the referee after he first was penalized, then directed his anger toward Chastain's father, who was in the stands cheering for his son. Soon after, the referee called the match, awarding Chastain the state championship..."It was kind of sad, because I was going to beat him fair and square. I didn't want it to end like that."
