Chastain, Baxter County, Arkansas. We discovered 1930s references, without detail, to Chastain, Arkansas, but could not find it on any list of towns. Thanks to Donnie Kendrick of Springfield, Missouri for the following information:

In my research, Chastain, Ark., located in present day Baxter Co., was a "community" that was known for the Chastains that lived there. They appear in the 1870 census of Izard Co., Ark. Two brothers, John and Joseph Chastain settled near Norfolk, Ark. Along with sisters, Martha Mitchell Wilkens Kirkendoll, Nancy Wolf Finley Luther, and Mary Garton, this family belonged to William D. and Mary Ann Fry Chastain. William was the son of Rev. Joseph Chastain. William settled near the Howell/Oregon Co. Mo line near Brandsville/Koshkonong. Most likely the Chasteen school in Oregon Co. is of this family.

More information on the William D. Chastain family is found in Pierre Chastain and His Descendents, Volume 1, pages 187-188 and Volume 2, pages 187-188. Their line of descent from Pierre is 5-William D.; 4-Joseph; 3-Rev. John; 2-Peter, Jr.; 1-Pierre.

Later, we found even more substantial evidence in a 1935 Chastain, Arkansas Postmark, which we were able to purchase.

Chastain Beach, Martin County, Florida. The 1.7 acre park at Chastain Beach is near the south end of Hutchinson Island. Access is at 1213 S.E. MacArthur Blvd in Stuart. Open hours are sunrise to sunset, and there are 30 free parking spaces. Visitors will find 200 feet of beach front, a pavilion and picnic tables, restrooms and showers, but no lifeguards. The beach supports fishing, swimming, surfing, snorkeling, shelling, and diving.

Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel says, “Surfers prefer Chastain Beach, known as ‘The Rocks’ for its line of outcroppings from sea to shore.” The land for Chastain Beach was purchased and donated by philanthropist Thomas M. Chastain, son of prominent resident Robert Lee Chastain, so the beach is perhaps named for one of them.

Chastain Beach was damaged during the 2004 hurricane season and was closed several months for restoration. See slideshow.

Chastain Communities, Hernando County, Florida. Businessman Gary Schraut's VLT Inc. has submitted a rezoning petition to county planners for a 110-acre development east of Brooksville. The project calls for 128 single-family homes and up to 240 multifamily homes to be built at the site, at the southeast corner of State Road 50 and Griffin Road. Commercial development is planned for the portion of the property that abuts S.R. 50.

The Planning and Zoning Commission is first scheduled to hear Schraut's petition Aug. 11(2003 CC).

Chastain is the name of Schraut's overall development. The plan is for different parts of the project to have their own identities and variations of the moniker, such as Chastain Crossing, Chastain Commons, and Reserves at Chastain. "I saw it on a road," Schraut said of the name. "I just liked it. It has a ring to it." Schraut said the homes at Chastain, which will cost between $135,000 and $190,000, will attract people fleeing the urban sprawl of Tampa and Pinellas County. ~St. Petersburg Times, By Will Van Sant, Times Staff Writer, July 12, 2003.
