Chastain Park

By far, the most well known Chastain place name is the 268 acre Chastain Park--the largest park in Atlanta, Georgia. The Park consists of several components, perhaps the most prominent of which is Chastain Amphitheater, where many classical and contemporary musical events are held. The namesake of Chastain Park is Fulton County Commissioner Troy Green Chastain, a major force behind the development of park. See much more at Chastain Park, Atlanta.

Chastain, Thomas County, Georgia

Thomas County was among the earliest areas of Georgia permanently settled by Chastains. Well before the massive influx of Chastains into the abandoned Cherokee lands of North Georgia, brothers James Chastain and Renny Chastain were in Thomas County near the border of South Georgia and Florida. The Chastain family left its mark on the county with the town of Chastain, three roads named Chastain, and Thomas Chastain Cemetery. See more on Chastain, Georgia.

Chastaintown, Fulton County, Georgia

Chastaintown was a horse trading center near Atlanta named for prominent citizen and land owner, Nelson Avery Chastain. Avery lived at the corner of Hemphill Avenue and Emmet Street, which is now Tenth Street. In 1901, the Atlantic Steel Hoop Company was founded in the north section of Chastaintown and grew to become one of Atlanta's largest manufacturers. Residential development built near the factory, and at some point the name changed from Chastaintown to Home Park. Hemphill and Tenth became the commercial center of the community. A Home Park Association article and an Atlantic Steel growth plan give additional information on the history of the community.

As Home Park, the area was annexed into Atlanta in 1909. With the expansion of Georgia Tech toward Home Park from the south, many students moved into the residential area. Interstate 75/85 now runs along the east side of the three: Atlantic Steel, Home Park, and Georgia Institute of Technology (see Satellite Photo), and Coca-Cola Headquarters is just to the south of that. Chastain Road, Chastains Lakes, and Related Streets and Business Parks (Cobb County)

In the Northwest Metro Atlanta area is Chastain Road in Cobb County, a major thoroughfare going east from Kennesaw to Marietta. As might be expected, there are businesses along the road that have taken on the Chastain name, such as the Chastain Branch of Riverside Bank. Chastain Road runs along the southern edge of Kennesaw State College. It crosses both I-75 and I-575 and has an exit off each Interstate. Visit the webcam views of I-75 North and I-75 South from the Chastain Road exit. Continuous bike lanes on Chastain Road are scheduled for completion by December 2004 from Big Shanty Road to Chastain Lakes Drive (a short street that leads from Chastain Road north to Chastains Lakes), connecting the college, the commercial area around the Interstate highways, and the Chastain Lakes community.

Just west of I-575, Chastain Center Blvd turns south from Chastain Road. Chastain Gardens Drive is in Chastain Park Townhomes just off Chastain Center Blvd and Wilson Road. East of I-575, Chastain Meadows Parkway leads south from Chastain Road into Chastain Meadows Business Park; Chastain Meadows Court forms a short spur to the east off Chastain Meadows Parkway. Other business parks in the area are Chastain Central and Chastain Place on Chastain Road west of Bell’s Ferry Road.

East of Bell's Ferry Road, Chastain Road becomes New Chastain Road and runs through a residential area with a number of Chastain Streets with Marietta addresses: Chastains Landings, Chastains Crossing, Chastain Court, Chastain Trace, Chastain Glen Lane, Chastain Trail, Chastain Place, and Chastain Cor(ner?). Map.

Chastain Road passes to the south of Chastains Lakes, and perhaps is named for them. The 50 acre Chastains Lakes are actually two lakes attached by a small connector. They serve as reservoirs, and each has a dam, West Chastains Lake Dam and East Chastains Lake Dam. The mean depth of the lakes is 7 feet, and the maximum is 18 feet. Fishermen will find Largemouth Bass and Spotted Bass. The third biggest Georgia lunker (17 lb. 14 oz.) was caught by Nickey Rich in Chastains Lakes in 1965. The lakes are surrounded by the beautiful Chastain Lakes subdivision. The community supports tennis and swimming amenities, and is home to the Chastain Lakes swim team.

On the opposite side of Kennesaw from the Chastain Road group is Chastain Pointe, a residential street west of Kennesaw about halfway between Kennesaw and Acworth. Marietta streets Chastain Manor Court, Chastain Manor Way, and Chastain Ridge Drive could not be located on the maps.

Other Chastain Streets in Metro Atlanta

A number of Chastain streets are near the popular Chastain Park in north Atlanta (Fulton County). These include Chastain Walk off Wieuca Road, east of the north end of the Park; Chastain Park Court off Roswell Road, east of the north end of the Park; Chastain Drive off Roswell Road, east of the south end of the Park; and Chastain Commons (not to be confused with Chastain Commons subdivision in Marietta), just off Powers Ferry Road west of the Park between Blanton Road and Hillside Drive. Chastain Cove is a little farther away, though it is still in the 30342 zip code. Go north on Roswell Road past Mt. Paran Road, take a left on Stewart Drive and another left onto Chastain Cove.

Just east of Downtown Atlanta, near I-20 as it goes through Rich Park, there is a Chastain Street which is a few blocks long.

Additional Chastain streets in the Metro Atlanta area are found in Alpharetta (Chastain Court), Norcross (Chastain Manor Drive), and Duluth (Chastain Place), all in the northeast metro area.

Georgia Chastain Streets Outside Metro Atlanta

Newnan in northwest Georgia is home to three Chastain streets: Chastain Circle, Chastain Loop, and Chastain Way. The three streets together form a community of homes in the Chastain Park subdivision off Greison Trail to the east of downtown Newnan. MAP.

Thomas County in south Georgia hosts three Chastain roads with both first and last names. Dixie Chastain Road is listed as being in Ochlocknee, Hansell Chastain Road in Thomasville, and Wade Chastain Road in Coolidge. However, these three towns form a rough inverted triangle. Thomasville is at the bottom corner of the triangle; Highway 19 goes northwest to Ochlocknee, and Highway 319 goes northeast to Coolidge. State Road 202 goes north up the center.

The three Chastain roads are near the common center of the triangle rather than in the towns, themselves, so they are within a few miles of each other. Hansell Chastain Road runs east from SR 202 to Hall Road; a bit farther north, Dixie Chastain Road goes west from SR 202 and then turns north to SR 188; just north of where Hansell Chastain Road dead ends into Hall Road, Wade Chastain Road goes east from Hall Road to Covey Lane. Just a few miles north of the three Chastain roads is the site of Chastain, Georgia.

Chastain Streets in other towns are found throughout Georgia. Dividing the state into five general sections, the towns are as follows:

The heaviest concentration is in northwest Georgia. In addition to Metro Atlanta, Cobb County, and Newnan: Blue Ridge (Chastain Street); Cherry Log (Chastain Road); La Fayette (Chastain Drive); Calhoun (Chastain Drive and Chastain Street); Talking Rock (Chastain Place); Marble Hill (Chastain Court); Dawsonville (Chastain Road and Chastain Mill Road); Ball Ground (Chastain Drive); Canton (Chastain Street); Buford (Chastain Park Court); Rock Mart (Chastain Road); Dallas (Chastain Drive and Chastain Way); Villa Rica (Chastain Court); and Palmetto (Chastain Road).

Northeast Georgia: Blairsville (Chastain Road); Young Harris (Chastain Road); Clayton (Carl Chastain Road); Sautee Nacoochee (Chastain Road); Lavonia (Chastain Road); Danielsville (Chastain Road); Elberton (Chastain Road); and Lincolnton (Chastain Drive).

Westcentral Georgia: Macon (Chastain Place); and Warner Robbins (Chastain Drive).

Eastcentral Georgia: Vidalia (Chastain Street).

South Georgia: Thomas County.

Water Bodies

The hills of North Georgia near the North Carolina border are home to several Chastain streams that are near each other. However, their namesakes may not be the same person since many Chastains have lived in North Georgia beginning in the 1820s.

Chastain Branch, Habersham County. Chastain Branch is a tributary to the Soque River. These excerpts are from a longer article by Justin Ellis.

Everyone who lives in Habersham County should at some point get a chance to see Chastain Branch, even if only for a moment. It is a tucked away jewel of a stream that to its great fortune begins and ends completely on National Forest lands.

The branch is named after the Chastain family that settled the area during the original land lotteries back in the 1820’s. Historically Chastain Branch harbored populations of native Brook Trout. Brook Trout are the most rare and threatened fish in the entire Soque Watershed Basin. They are also Georgia’s only native trout. They require crystal clear cold water and have a hard time competing with Rainbow Trout which are an introduced species. In areas where Rainbow Trout have been introduced, Brook Trout populations are often eliminated.

Chastain Branch emanates from the steep slopes of Oaky Mountain. The ridgeline of Oaky Mountain is also the county line between Habersham and Rabun counties. When standing atop the mountain, if you look west everything you see below flows into the Soque River and into Habersham County. If you look east everything below flows to the Tallulah River and into Rabun County.

As the Forest Service sought to identify areas for new ATV trails, the Oaky Mountain ridgeline was chosen and plans made for a trail system. Many, many years earlier there had been a timber road that paralleled Chastain Branch all the way to its beginnings. At the time it seemed like a good idea to have ATV traffic come down off of Oaky Mountain and loop up this timber road, creating a circle.

Two problems have ensued as a result of this trail. The dirt trail is in steep terrain and every time it rains, the road washes sediment into the branch, leaving a rutted road in its wake. To eliminate these ruts the Forest Service must then regrade the road, which loosens more dirt, which then is subject to additional erosion. The trail also closely parallels the branch for over a mile with a narrow forest buffer of only 15 to 50 feet. The Forest Service has committed to permanently fix the erosion problems by completely rerouting the ATV trail away from Chastain Branch. The plan calls for re-routing the ATV trail back onto the Oaky Mountain ridgeline and allowing the existing trail to be restored to a healthy forest. Map
